Sun Awareness for People with Parkinson’s Disease

Our Team Fundraising Goal is $500.00! So far we have raised $350.00!

People with Parkinson’s disease are at a two to seven fold increased risk of developing malignant melanoma. This increased risk is not due to dopaminergic therapy (i.e. levodopa drug treatment). The positive association between these two diseases may be explained by pigmentation changes in melanin and/or melanin biosynthesis, as well as alterations in Parkinson’s disease genes. From a clinical point of view, early diagnosis of melanoma in Parkinson’s patients is critical and can be enhanced by regular skin exams by a dermatologist. Our team’s goals are to raise awareness of this increased risk of melanoma in the Parkinson’s community and to raise funds for melanoma research. This research could include studies of the biological reason for this increased risk and how this new knowledge could be used to improve diagnosis, prevention and treatment of both diseases.
